Hermed lidt at tygge på i weekenden;

There is no doubt in my mind that the image below represents some kind of tipping point. "The Littlest Prisoner at Abu Ghraib" from TheStranger;

Your child will be the hit of the neighborhood costume parade in this recreation of the Abu Ghraib prisoner-abuse scandal's most indelible image. As an added bonus this easy-to-make costume will remind everyone on your child's trick-or-treat route of our national shame!

Very interesting computer industry trend; The user is doing the repairs according to this Wired News article. Especially the new G5 iMac has been designed with this concept in mind. If only cars worked this way...

Looking good maan; iPod Photo. How many days before someone hacks it so videoclips can be played on it...? With the A/V out support it would make a nifty DivX player, to say the least. The iPod U2 Special Edition I wouldn't touch wit a ten feet pole, but that's just me.

Today I'm listening to the Wired Creative Commons CD [Read more about it at Creative Commons and in the Wired cover story]. You can get all the tracks here. It's good. And it's legal. You'll need BitTorrent, this would be a good occation to install it.

Jared Diamond on How to get rich;

So what this suggests is that we can extract from human history a couple of principles. First, the principle that really isolated groups are at a disadvantage, because most groups get most of their ideas and innovations from the outside. Second, I also derive the principle of intermediate fragmentation: you don't want excessive unity and you don't want excessive fragmentation; instead, you want your human society or business to be broken up into a number of groups which compete with each other but which also maintain relatively free communication with each other. And those I see as the overall principles of how to organize a business and get rich.

And on the same note (sort of); The Long Tail;

Unlimited selection is revealing truths about what consumers want and how they want to get it in service after service, from DVDs at Netflix to music videos on Yahoo! Launch to songs in the iTunes Music Store and Rhapsody. People are going deep into the catalog, down the long, long list of available titles, far past what's available at Blockbuster Video, Tower Records, and Barnes & Noble. And the more they find, the more they like. As they wander further from the beaten path, they discover their taste is not as mainstream as they thought (or as they had been led to believe by marketing, a lack of alternatives, and a hit-driven culture).

Power. Control. Understanding. Pick any two. Anyways, please read this little text (trust me, it's worth it);

The world is changing again.  What happened to print a decade ago is about to happen to television.  And television is far more potent than print.  This time the revolution will be televised - and it will make the Web era look like a tempest in a teacup.  They'll call you criminals, revolutionaries, thieves and saboteurs.  And they'll be right.   But fuck them.  Fuck big media.   You're the asteroid, just about to break the atmosphere, and wipe out those fucking dinosaurs.

Ak ja, endnu en nyhed med overordentlig indlysende indhold, hvor det bl.a hedder "Er der kold luft og ingen hygge på arbejdspladsen, bliver der lavet mindre". Hvor får de det fra? Sidder der folk og hæver løn for at komme op med den slags chokerende nyheder? Jeg ved det ikke, men "Nyheden" fik en ven til at sende mig følgende citat fra en Francis Wheen artikel fra 1994;

It is a little-known fact that, when not writing these articles, I attend to my duties as chairman of a large multinational conglomerate. Statements of the Obvious plc - also known by the acronym 'SO?' since that is what cynics usually say when they see out products - was set up a few years ago to meet the ever-growing demand by many consumers to be
told what they already knew. You have probably seen the work of SO? without realizing it. One of our most profitable subsidiaries produces all those market research 'surveys' which are such a boon to news editors with space to fill. 'Unemployment is damaging families" according to a survey published yesterday' (Guardian, 13 April 1994). That was one of ours. Then there was the research we conducted a couple of weeks ago, which found that many old people 'said that there had been opportunities they wish they had taken'. Yet another of our recent triumphs was the disclosure that many children 'are more familiar with computer game heroes ... than with childhood literature characters such as Alice in Wonderland and Little Red Riding Hood'. In February, great publicity was given to our startling discovery that many undergraduates find it difficult to live on their student grants. A couple of months earlier, after interviewing 1500 people, we revealed that few men share household chores equally with their female partners.

Allow me a little prediction; The new Dreamworks movie opening today; Shark Tales will be a flop. Looks like a sloppy version of "Finding Nemo". In the other corner, Pixar's next movie The Incredibles will be another big hit.

[Update. Well, I guess I can kiss my career as a movie industry analyst goodbye; "Shark Tales had the best October opening of any movie ever Ouch.]

Über-Smagsdommeren Bo Tao fra politiken giver TV2 Charlie tørt på;

Stumbled across an old interview with Kevin Kelly on Salon Magazine. He is now turning the exhilarating headline of the article; "What does technology want?" into his next book. Reading the Salon interview, it becomes quite clear that the new book will be a good one;

My own observation is that we have a love-hate relationship with technology, just as we have with nature. In one breath we bow down before the natural world for its beauty, power and sustenance, for without an untainted natural world we're dead. But in the next breath we erect walls, sterile barriers, vaccines, and hack living things back so they won't conquer us.

It's clear life would overrun us quickly if we didn't push back. As technology accrues some of the power and complexity of life, we are beginning to treat it with the same two minds: We're intoxicated by technology's emerging beauty, power and ability to feed our creativity, but in the next moment, it's obvious that unless we hack technology back it will overtake us. I actually share these two minds.

But of the two perspectives, I find the latter more fascinating because of our ignorance. We already know what pushing technology back is like because we'd done little else for hundreds of years. But we have no serious inkling of what technology wants. As technology becomes more animated and autonomous, I think we should be asking ourselves where it wants to go, what its biases are and how far it can govern itself. We need to know this at the very least in order to push back expertly and with appropriate force -- otherwise we push in blindness.

My main man Dawkins sets the record straight in this eight year old lecture;

It's often said that people 'need' something more in their lives than just the material world. There is a gap that must be filled. People need to feel a sense of purpose. Well, not a BAD purpose would be to find out what is already here, in the material world, before concluding that you need something more. How much more do you want? Just study what is, and you'll find that it already is far more uplifting than anything you could imagine needing.
